Ajax
Ajax stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Ajax is not a technology in itself, but a new way to use a number of existing technologies together. These existing technologies are HTML or XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM, XML, XSLT, and the XMLHttpRequest object. Using Ajax web applications are able to make quick, incremental updates to the user interface without reloading the entire browser page. This enables the users to have highly interactive and locally intelligent client-side applications that can respond to user input and change their state or interface without the need for a full-page refresh or interruptive communications with a server. As Ajax based applications do not have to reload all page data but only the needed pieces to update with new content, so Ajax can dramatically improve the bandwidth performance of web applications. For sites that experience a highly variable load, Ajax can mean fewer servers, lower bandwidth bills, and less risk of failure.
Abobe Flex and Flash
Adobe's Flex offers one of the richest and most powerful options to develop and deploy cross platform, rich Internet applications based on their proprietary Macromedia Flash platform. Flex uses an XML-based language MXML to develop rich user interfaces and comes with various components like drag and drop, sortable columns, charting/graphing, built in animation effects. Flex provides support for enterprise services such as XML over HTTP, RSS and XML SOAP Web Services, security and enterprise integration.
